Sample Unit 4

Impact Values is a complete course in oral communication for students who already have fundamental speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in English. Impact Values is based on a collection of 30 timeless topics that adult students have expressed an interest in discussing. The topics are organized into five sets of six units: People, Relationships, Workplace, Family, and Society.

The sample unit shown here, taken from the section "Values in People," highlights the conflict between a young woman who wants to have cosmetic surgery, and her mother, who tries to dissuade her.

The sample unit is typical of all the units. It consists of a two page spread: the left-hand page presents the story (which is also on the audio CD at the back of each book), while the right-hand page presents four follow-up activities: Points of View, What Are Your Values?, Clarifying and Exchanging, and a Communication Activity tailored to the unit.

The Appendix contains a Glossary with natural expressions and useful vocabulary used in the stories, and Extension Activities which provide follow-up or homework ideas.
