Metaphoric Relationships with Pets
This is an excellent research article which looks at how people talk about and interact with their pets, based on interviews with some 27 subjects who are owners of (owned by?) dogs, cats, horses, and birds, and by observing pet shows of various kinds. It outlines the various ways people might view animals.
